Recently, my work asked for people to post podcast recommendations. This was probably just an attempt to distract us from the horror that is everyday life now, but I love podcasts, which distract me from the horror that is everyday life now, and devoted my lunch hour to determining a top ten list of recommendations.
Note: This does not include:
-Podcasts that are about niche interests and require some context to enjoy (otherwise, the Talking Simpsons podcast would be my #2)
-Limited run podcasts such as S-Town
-Ongoing story podcasts you can't just pick up any episode of, such as Less is Morgue
My top ten recommendations are (don't worry I have more, but these are the top ten):
1. THE NOSLEEP PODCAST (horror stories)https://www.thenosleeppodcast.com/Example: Here is a link to the bizarre masterpiece, “Eggs” https://www.thenosleeppodcast.com/eggs2. MY BROTHER MY BROTHER AND ME (funny bad advice)https://www.maximumfun.org/shows/my-brother-my-brother-and-meExample: Here is how the brothers answered the question, “My friend doesn’t know I’m a cop and now I need to arrest him, what should I do?” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgstEs-l2s43. YOU MUST REMEMBER THIS (old Hollywood)http://www.youmustrememberthispodcast.com/Example: All the seasons are very different so it’s hard to provide an example. I love the Bela and Boris season because I love horror movies, but the Charles Manson’s Hollywood season is very well done/creepy.4. THE LAST PODCAST ON THE LEFT (true crime/supernatural/every bad thing that has ever happened)
Example: If you want to laugh, the two-parter on Belle Gunness. If you want to be at the edge of your seat, the Donner Party.
5. IMAGINED LIFE (hard to categorize)
Each episode tells you the story of “your” life before you became famous. It’s the origin story of a famous person. Some of them I’ve been able to guess right away; some I had no idea.
Example: Idk, I binged the whole thing
6. THE FLOP HOUSE (funny movie reviews)
Comedians reviewing movies that were commercial flops. Even if you haven’t seen the movie, this will make you laugh.
Example: They’ve been on for years! Look for a movie that you’ve seen.
7. DISGRACELAND (musicians behaving badly)
True crime meets music history! I have learned so much about so many musicians, some of them (e.g., GiGi Allen) I had to look up afterwards to make sure they were real.
Example: The two-parter on John Lennon was probably the most interesting to me but they are all good.
8. REPLY ALL (a podcast about the internet)
This is another one that’s really hard to describe. If you were a fan of “Serial,” I would recommend:
Example: On the Inside (four parter)
9. SAWBONES (funny medical history)
OK so some of it isn’t exactly funny but super interesting. A doctor and her husband medically analyze current culture, and also recap bizarre medical practices from the past.
Example: THE ONE ABOUT EATING TIDE PODS! Also all their holiday episodes are great; there’s one about the actual medical implications of everything that happened to the bad guys in Home Alone.
10. WAIT WAIT DON’T TELL ME (comedians answer questions about the news)
I’m not sure if this counts as a typical podcast, but it’s a more uplifting source for news than like… any other news source
So that's what I shared with my coworkers and I stand by my recommendations. As a bonus, I tried to add a picture of me with the NoSleep cast when I saw them on tour last fall but inserting pictures was not working, so just picture me with five awesome people. And also picture me as a supermodel who can read minds because since inserting a picture didn't work, I can play with reality like that.
